Altun Ha and Cave Tubing

The beauty of “La Isla Bonita” San Pedro is its easy access to Belize City by sea (via San Pedro Belize Express Water taxi or Ocean Ferry Belize) or by air (via Tropicair or Maya Island Air). After you’ve arrived on mainland Belize City by your selected means of travel, you’ll meet and become acquainted with your guide before heading off to see the beautiful Maya Temple of Altun Ha archaeological site.

Altun Ha is the closest Maya Ruin Temple to Belize City and the most visited in the country.

Additionally, there are thirteen structures (the Sun God’s Temple or the Masonry Altars Temple). Close to the Caribbean Sea, Altun Ha is a unique cultural zone and other coastal Maya sites. There are also no stelae at Altun Ha, but the discovery of rich tombs indicates that the ruling elite enjoyed access to substantial amounts of exotic goods.

Another beautiful feature of this site is the large water reservoir called “Rock stone Pond.” At the bottom, you’ll

Our next stop is Jaguar Paw:

After a scenic drive to the outpost, you will meet your tour guides to issue inflatable tubes, headlamps, and life vests, followed by a quick orientation and safety briefing.

A 30-minute hike is up next, which includes:

•      Wading through calming water streams.

•      Trekking beneath the thick rainforest canopy on flat terrain; and

•      Viewing the exotic flora and fauna that live in the area

At the entrance of the cave system, you’ll embark on an exhilarating tour through the mysterious Maya underworld. First, crystalline stalagmites and stalactites line the cave of Xibalba that will put you in touch with ancient Maya history. Then, as you make your way through the darkness, you will get to experience all the sights, sounds, and even smells that the indigenous Maya did centuries before. (At the end, if you’re open to added adventure, ask your guide about a visit to the mini waterfall and swimming area!)

After leaving the falls, you’ll emerge into the sunlight and free float gently downstream back to where the tour started.

NOTE: If you are not planning to bring along a change of clothing for cave tubing, you should wear comfortable shoes and apparel that will dry quickly. We have onsite showers and bathroom facilities if you wish to change clothes.
