Belize Tours from Hopkins
A Deep Dive into Maya History. Journey from the coast of Hopkins to the vibrant Cayo District to explore one of Belize's most impressive ancient cities. This tour takes you across the scenic Hummingbird Highway and over the Mopan River to Xunantunich. Without the rush of a second activity, we take our time exploring the plazas, ball courts, and the massive El Castillo pyramid.
The drive from Hopkins is an adventure in itself. We travel the Hummingbird Highway, passing through the Maya Mountains, citrus orchards, and the famous "Sleeping Giant" mountain range. It is widely considered the most beautiful road in Central America.
Upon arrival in the village of San Jose Succotz, we board the hand-cranked ferry to cross the Mopan River. Then, we enter the jungle park.
The Climb: The highlight is ascending "El Castillo" (The Castle). Standing 130 feet tall, it offers a 360-degree view of the Belize River Valley and the Guatemalan border.
The History: Your guide will explain the significance of the "Stone Woman" legend and decipher the intricate stucco friezes that decorate the eastern side of the temple.
Explore at your own pace. Because this is a dedicated ruin tour (not a rushed combo), we have flexibility. Want to spend extra time taking photos at the top? No problem. Want to stop at a local chocolate shop or market in San Ignacio Town after the tour? We can do that too. It’s your day.

1. How difficult is the climb?
It is a workout, but manageable for most people. There are plenty of places to stop and rest on the way up. The view from the top is absolutely worth the effort!
2. Can we see monkeys?
Yes! Howler monkeys often inhabit the trees right next to the temples. Listen for their loud calls as we explore the site.
3. Is it a long drive from Hopkins?
It is about 2 hours each way. However, the Hummingbird Highway is stunning, and we can make stops for photos or bathroom breaks whenever you need.
4. Can we stop at the Inland Blue Hole on the way back?
Since we aren't doing a second major activity, we often have time for a quick swim at St. Herman's Blue Hole on the way back for a small additional park fee. Just ask your guide!
5. Is lunch included?
Yes, we stop at a local restaurant for a proper Belizean meal (usually chicken, rice and beans, and plantains) to give you a taste of Cayo culture.
